Momentive Technologies’ boron nitride coatings are available in several water-based formulations and an aerosol spray. After applying & drying, a dry film lubricant consisting of BN and a binder remain.

General Instructions for Use
Boron nitride water-based coatings are available in one and five gallon containers, and in several grades.
Water dilution is recommended to enhance application for GPC due to higher solids content. Other grades may be diluted as needed. FPD can be easily reconstituted in a container with the required amount of water using a standard paint mixer.
All formulations can be applied by brushing, rolling, dipping or spraying using various commercially available methods. Multiple coats may be necessary for complete coverage. Forced drying at 80°C for 20 minutes is recommended for each layer.
BN coatings can be applied to either hot or cold surfaces. Dried coatings can be readily handled, smoothed or polished with a soft, dry cloth.
Potential Applications
Boron nitride’s crystal structure make it an ideal lubricant, as crystals are able to slide easily between mating surfaces. BN also provides a barrier to many molten metals & glasses to prevent corrosion, surface defects & sticking.:
- Dry film lubricant to prevent sticking to increase the life of dies/molds, improve product surface finishes, and reduce production times in casting, stamping, forging, extrusion & powder metallurgy.
- Barrier coating for molten metal processing.
- Die coating for injection molding to improve die release and increase production speeds.
- Minimize surface defects, improve mold life and reduce clean-up in glass making.
- Coating on graphite plates can virtually eliminate carbon contamination and reactivity during metallic & ceramic sintering.
- Protect surfaces from weld spatter, provide superior stop-off protection, and protect MIG/MAG welding nozzles from weld spatter.
